Elephant Seals
Lil and I drove down to Ano Nuevo to see the elephant seal rookery amid the backdrop of an abandoned lighthouse. Tip: Don’t go without a reservation! We were lucky to squeeze into one of the last tours of the day.
Elephant seals were once thought to be extinct, but they have been making a comeback thanks to protections from the Mexican and US governments. Throughout the year, these mammals travel thousands of miles and dive to extreme depths to hunt on the ocean floor. Males and females take slightly different routes, but return to the rookery each year to mate.
